2008 TAX ALERT

Your 2008 income tax return is likely to be more complicated than ever.  There were no less than three different economic stimulus acts passed during 2008 that may affect your return.  Prepare well for your appointment at Accutax by having all brokerage transaction statements, stimulus payment information and deductions ready before your arrive so you do not have to amend your return later on.  If in doubt, review the appropriate checklist we have provided on this site (click on "Download checklists" to the left) or call your local Accutax office.

Time to organize your records

Right now, while it's on your mind, is the best time to create a collection point to hold W-2s, investment statements and other tax-related documents.  It could be as simple as a large envelope or a small accordion file.  A few documents arrive in December, but most will arrive throughout January.  Then when you are ready to visit Accutax, you have all your data at hand.  Remember, the IRS gets a copy of most of these forms, so it's best to wait for all your paperwork to arrive before your appointment.

Self-employed filers and landlords

If you file Schedule C or Schedule E or both, click the "Download checklists" bar for help organizing your business income and expenses.

TAX TIP

Are you a volunteer fireman or EMT?  Then you are entitled to a $200 to $400 tax credit on your New York State income tax.  Your Accutax tax preparer will apply for the credit.
